California-based Caterpillar was founded in 1925 by two companies that have been competing with each other for nearly half a century.
Holt Manufacturing and Best Tractor decided to join forces in the production of machinery. First, tractors and tractors, and then other heavy machines for industry and agriculture.
After the end of WWII, Caterpillar began to expand production and began deliveries to other countries, as well as the construction of factories to eliminate the need for long delivery to Europe and Asia. First in the UK, and then in Japan, Caterpillar factories appear.
Caterpillar and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. create one of the first joint ventures in Japan where the American partner has partial ownership rights.
Caterpillar Mitsubishi Ltd. started production in 1965; it was later renamed Shin Caterpillar Mitsubishi Ltd. and nowadays ranks second in Japan in the production of construction and mine equipment.
At the beginning of the 21st century, Caterpillar had 132 dealerships outside the United States. Today, it is the largest manufacturer of heavy trucks in the world.
